May Flooding '09

Mother's Day was ruined this year due to flooding. Although it wasn't as bad as the 2003 flood in our area, other places got hit hard and it was very devastating. I managed to get some pictures to show everyone what it looks like when we have high water.

Saturday morning when we woke up we could already see the river from our living room window. My dad worked all day trying to get a bunch of trees that he had recently cut down to higher ground so the water wouldn't wash them off. Around 6:00 that evening the water was starting to creep into our lower bottom behind our house. When I woke up this morning, I was surprised at how much the water had rose since I last saw it.

Yesterday morning my dad tried to call his dad to see how everything was going in their area. Everytime he called he would always get a busy signal so we figured their power was off or phone was out. Around 5:00 pm I went to the WSAZ website to see what they was saying. I started watching this video of flooding in Mingo county and all of a sudden I see Papaw Shannon's house! I was in shock and couldn't believe the water was that high. Here's the link to the video, and for those of you who don't know his house is a two story with three garage doors and they're sitting on their front porch. (I was going to post the video on here but for some reason the HTML code isn't accepted so they wouldn't let me.)http://www.wsaz.com/video/?autoStart=true&topVideoCatNo=default&clipId=3742880

Here are some of the pictures that I took today. This one I took at around 10:00 am this morning. This is our lower bottom behind our house where we let our goats out during the day. It's completely covering our electric fence.

Here is the church across from our house. In 2003 the water was past the central air unit. So this was nothing compared to then. The only way to get to Nanny's house right now is by a boat and earlier there were two boats out in out the bottom going from one side to the other. Here's a picture of the road going to Nanny's house, you can barely even tell there's suppose to be a road there. The water was almost to Ollie Dingess' driveway. Nanny said it was at the bottom of Ruth's driveway on the other side.

This was taken in the straight stretch before you get to Warfield Elementary. I didn't take this by the way. (: I wonder where that truck thinks they're going.

Right now it's 5:00 pm and the water hasn't dropped much. Probably somewhere around 2 foot, (that I can see), it maybe a little more I'm just estimating. :)

If you'd like to go on WSAZ's website and view some of their pictures that other people have submitted then go here http://www.wsaz.com/news/headlines/44635067.html they update it alot and there's alot of interesting pictures. I even submitted several that I took.

*If something happens and the video I have posted doesn't work right please let me know and I can email it to you. Although it should, I don't know why it wouldn't. :)*
